The massive destruction caused by Hurricane Milton across Florida

Hurricane Milton made landfall in Florida as a dangerous Category 3 hurricane, leaving a trail of flooding and destruction in its wake.

Hurricane Milton dumped heavy rains and unleashed life-threatening storm surges and damaging winds across a large swath of Florida after making landfall near Siesta Key Wednesday night.

The hurricane, which came ashore as a Category 3 storm with sustained winds of 120 mph (about 193 km/h), weakened to a Category 1 as it moved over land. But even with the weakening, it's still a dangerous storm.

Path of Destruction: The full extent of the devastation in Milton will only become apparent when the sun rises Thursday morning, but CNN crews and local officials are already reporting flooded roads, flying debris and extensive damage to homes. In St. Petersburg, winds ripped the roof off Tropicana Field and a tower crane collapsed on a building. In Tampa overnight, life-threatening flash flooding swamped roads while transformer explosions lit up the sky.
